Update (15 June 2026): Anthropic is set to meet the White House over the suspension, according to the BBC and CNBC. This is far from settled, which only underlines the point below.
On 12–13 June 2026, Anthropic disabled access to its two newest and most powerful models, Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5, just days after launch. According to CNBC, the company acted to comply with a US government export-control directive, citing national security and jailbreak concerns.
Multiple outlets, including Forbes and the BBC, report that the suspension applies specifically to foreign nationals, anyone outside the US. Mythos 5 is Anthropic's top-tier model; Fable 5 is the broader, "made-safe" version for general use.
Why this matters to European companies
This is not a US domestic matter. "Foreign nationals" means you: companies in Sweden, the UK, Spain, Norway and the rest of the EU. If your workflow ran on Fable 5 or Mythos 5 last week, it may be switched off today, without warning and without you doing anything wrong.
It exposes an uncomfortable truth: when your operation runs on a single US model, your uptime depends on decisions made in Washington, not by you. A policy decision across the Atlantic became your downtime overnight.
The real problem: concentration risk
The industry has gotten used to treating the latest model as infrastructure, like power from the wall. But a model is not electricity. It can be withdrawn, repriced, regulated or geo-blocked. VentureBeat put the lesson bluntly: enterprises can no longer afford to run critical workflows on any single model, or even a single vendor.
Scrutinising the hype does not mean abandoning AI. It means building so you survive the day a model disappears.
What we recommend
- Don't lock yourself in. Build workflows that can swap models without starting over. Vendor-neutrality isn't a luxury. It's continuity.
- Have a plan B. Know in advance which model you fall back to, and test it before you need it.
- Own your data and integrations. That's the difference between an outage and a disaster.
That's how we build at Primetech: AI and automation that starts in your everyday, with vendor-neutral advice and no lock-in. Want to know how exposed you are today? Book a free consultation and we'll go through it in plain language.
