What happened

China's Moonshot AI released Kimi K3, a model with 2.8 trillion parameters and the largest open-weight model to date. According to CNBC and VentureBeat it rivals the best American systems from OpenAI and Anthropic, and according to Tom's Hardware it beats Claude Fable 5 on a coding benchmark. And it is open: anyone can download and run it.

Why "open" is the point

The truly interesting thing is not that the model is Chinese or the biggest. It is that it is open. A model you can run yourself means three things: no per-token cost that spirals as you scale, no vendor that can switch you off overnight, and your data never has to leave the building.

That is the opposite of the single-vendor risk we wrote about when the US switched off Claude Fable 5: when a policy decision in another country becomes your downtime. Open models are one of the ways out of that dependency.

The uncomfortable nuance

But do not fall for the idea that "open" means "free and easy". Downloading a 2.8-trillion-parameter model is one thing. Running it securely, with the right infrastructure and expertise, is another. For most smaller companies it is not worth operating a frontier model yourself.

And a Chinese model raises a fair question: where does your data end up if you run it through a cloud service? For a European company under GDPR, that is not a detail. The point is not "avoid Chinese models", but: do not chase the leaderboard, chase what solves your task, and do it with your data protection clear.
